With the development of science and economy, the entire world becomes an earth town. Nowadays, it is much easier for us to make friends with some people who are from the western societies. During the communication, you can find that there are a lot of cultural differences between the west and the east. To understand each other better, we need to learn and accept the differences. Here I’d like to talk about some attitudes toward privacy in western and Chinese culture.
Privacy means the quality or state of being hidden from, or undisturbed by, the observation or activities of other people. Privacy is one of the common places in culture, but it has been given different meanings in different cultures.
According to the traditional Chinese values, privacy is a group orientation and the individual would not have the conscience of privacy. People in the group should not and would not emphasize the individual privacy. However, in the western world, especially in USA, keeping privacy has been regarded as a symbol of being independent and self-value. In details, some examples are given below:
1.Topics.
In China, when people meet with each other, some topics are spoken of naturally, such as names, age, salary, marriage and so on. While in west, people are unwilling to talk about those, even sometimes they will feel offended because they think those topics as privacy. They prefer the topic about weather when they start talking.
In general, those questions below should not be asked:
How old are you?
What’s your income?
How much did you pay for this coat/that car?
Are you single or married?
Why did you vote for Obama/McCain?
In Chinese point of view, those questions asked above indicate their friendliness and caring toward others. Asking westerners instead will cause some misunderstandings. Compared with Chinese, westerners emphasize more on individual privacy. They even don’t talk a lot with their neighbors. It is said “Good fences make good neighbors.” Most of American families live separated from each other. Well, in China, people enjoy living in groups. They get a lot of chance meeting with each other. They’d like to help each other and care about each other. The problems of neighbors will be highly seemed as the group’s. This difference stems from the collectivism the east advocate and the individualism the west stress.
2.Visiting One Friend’s Home.
In China, people can go to visit their friend’s home, when they pass by their friend’s home. In most cases, for the unexpected visiting, their friend will not mind, and treat with warm welcome and hospitality instead. But if in west, for the unexpected visiting, maybe they will by the door say, “Sorry, I am busy today.” “A man’s home is his castle.” If people wanna go see their friend at home, generally, they will call them before so that there is enough time for the hostess dressing up and doing some preparation.
3.Personal Letters.
Personal letters should be protected, as we all know. And also, in west and in Chinese both, unfolding the others’ letter without permission are illegal. But in China, some parents unfold their children’s letters, although they haven’t asked their children before. Another example in the case, for the so-called education, some parents read their children’s dairies ignoring the feelings of their children. And what’s more, some people take the stamps away from others’ letters in secret. All of those above are unreasonable and even illegal.
In west, individualism is widely accepted, including personal freedom and rights, the privacy’s protection, and the equality among the people. Therefore, the parents they won’t deal with their children’s matters that way. By the way, calling parents by names is another way to be equal, I’d like to say.
4.Going to See a Doctor.
In most English-speaking countries, the doctors don’t allow other people to stand by them and watch when they are doing physical examinations for their patient. Because to protect the privacy, they don’t wanna let others know the physical conditions of their patient. However, in China, it is found often that some other people stand near, watching. To some degree, they invade that patient’s privacy. What’s worse, some patients will keep quiet about some of their illness, which will have a bad influence on their treatments. That will be really dangerous.
5.The Arrangement of the Desks in the Office.
In most Chinese offices, people share his/her office with others. They don’t mind that, although they are eager to possess their own office.
While in west, they will try their best to get some space for their own office area. If the house is not big enough, they will use some mobile borders to separate from each other.
With the further development of globalization, people from different parts of the world have produced similar understanding of privacy. Trying to understand and respecting other cultures are the best solution to avoid misunderstandings during the intercultural communications.
