The Swiss army knife is a popular device that is recognized all over the world. In Switzerland, there is a saying that every good Swiss citizen has one in his or her pocket. But the knife had poor beginnings.
In the late nineteenth century, the Swiss army gave its soldiers a gun that required a special screwdriver (螺丝刀) to take it apart and clean it. At the same time, canned food was becoming common in the army. Swiss generals decided to equip each soldier with a standard knife to serve both as a screwdriver and a can opener.
It was a lifesaver for Swiss knife makers, who were struggling to compete with
cheaper German imports. In 1884, Carl Elsener, head of the Swiss knife maker, seized that opportunity with both hands, and designed a soldier's knife that the army loved. It was a simple knife with one big blade (刀片), a can opener, and a screwdriver.
A few years after the soldier's knife was issued, the "Schweizer Offizier Messer," or Swiss Officer's Knife. came on the market. 'Interestingly, the Officer's Knife was never given to those serving in the army. The Swiss army purchasers considered the new model with a corkscrew (瓶塞钻) for opening wine not "essential for survival," so officers had to buy this new model by themselves. But its special multi-functional design later launched (发行 ) the knife as a global brand. After the Second World War, a great number of American soldiers were stationed in Europe. And as they could buy the Swiss army knife at shops on army bases, they bought huge quantities of them. However it seems that "Schweizer Offizier Messer" was too difficult for them to say, so they just called it the Swiss army knife, and that is the name which is now known by all over the world.
21. What does "It" in the third paragraph refer to?
A. Every good Swiss citizen had a knife in his pocket.
B. Swiss knives were competing with imported knives.
C. Canned food was becoming popular in the Swiss army.
D. The Swiss army needed a knife for every soldier.
22. Why didn't the Swiss army purchase the Swiss Officer's Knife?
A. The army had no budget to make the purchase.
B. The new design was not considered necessary for officers to own.
C. The design of the knife was too simple.
D. The knife was sold out to American soldiers.
23, Who gave the name “the Swiss army knife" to the knife discussed in the passage?
A. Carl Elsener. B. Swiss generals.
C. American soldiers. D. German businessmen.
24. The author writes this passage______.
A. to, explain the origin of the Swiss army knife
B. to introduce the functions of the Swiss army knife
C. to emphasize the importance of the Swiss army knife.
D. to tell a story about the designer of the Swiss army knife
B
Last week I talked with some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.
Giving that to the students who are training to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without "outside help". "What kind of help is that?" I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.
"Surgery (外科手术) one replied.
I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job。
One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. "They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone-as it re-grows, you can get at least 5 cm taller!"
At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can't deny that, but I don't think I would put myself .through months of pain just to be a few centimeters taller. I don't even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I am not trying to hide the fact-that I am just not tall !
It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting "perfection", and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.
No one is born perfect, yet magazines , TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as-being the model. Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery. clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that "perfection" is a requirement and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost.
In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.
25. Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to
A. become a model B. get an advantage over others in job-hunt
C. marry a better man \\woman D. attract more admirers
26. According to the passage the author believes that____.
A. media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgery
B. everyone should purchase perfection . whatever the cost
C. it's right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs
D, it is one's appearance instead of skills that really matters in one's career
27. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Young Graduates Have Higher Expectation
B. Young Graduates' Opinions about Cosmetic Surgery ;
C. Young Graduates Face a Different Situation in job-hunt
D. Young Graduates Look to Surgery for Better Jobs
C
UGG boots, which are particularly popular among young teenage girls, have been a winter-weather fashion for several years now, combining function, comfort warmth and even some style. What many UGG-Iovers don't know is that their boots are a place for bacteria growth and cause foot problems.
Doctors believe the boots are leading to more and more people suffering pains in their feet and knees. As the foot does not get the proper support on the inside, it will lead to more ankle, knee, hip and back problems.
These boots are not designed for outside wear, That something becomes a trend or fashionable doesn't mean it's good or right. The particular problem with this type of footwear is that it is unsupported. It's a slipper. You wouldn't normally expect to be doing outdoor activities from something used indoors. If you decide to wear your sleep coat outside all the time, someone will come up and say it's not a good idea. Doctors explained that the feet issues become a particular problem among young teenage girls, whose bones are "plastic" and developing when they are growing. If that structure is developing in an inappropriate way, then eventually the structure will be deformed ".
Mike Neiu , a consultant surgeon, said, "As the foot slides around, you get wear and tear on the joints on the inside of the foot The ankle is in the wrong position the thigh(大腿) bone also changes position, and you get an abnormal movement in the pelvis(骨盆) , which leads to back problems. "

Between the innocence of babyhood and seriousness of manhood we find a delightful creature called a "boy". Boys come in different sizes, weights, and colors, but all boys have the same belief: to enjoy every second of every minute of every hour of every day and to fill the air with noise until the adult males-pack them off to bed at night.
Boys are found everywhere-on top of, under, inside of, climbing on, swinging from running around, or jumping to this and that! Mothers spoil them, little girls hate them, older sisters and brothers love them, an d God protects them. A boy is TRUTH with dirt on its face, BEAUTY with a cut on its finger, WISDOM with chocolate in its hair, and HOPE of the future with a snake in its pocket.
When you are busy, a boy is a trouble-maker and a noise. When you want him to make a good impression, his brain turns to jelly or else he becomes a wild creature bent on destroying the world and himself with it.
A boy is a creature with mixture-he has the stomach of a horse, the digestion of stones and sand, the energy of an atomic bomb, the curiosity of a cat, the imagination of a superwoman, the shyness of a sweet girl, the brave nature of a bull, the violence of a firecracker, but when you ask him to make something, he has five thumbs on each hand.
He likes ice cream, knives, saws, Christmas, humorous books, woods, water (in its natural habitat), large animals, Dad, trains, Saturday morning, and fire engines. He is not much for girls, overcoats, adults, or bedtime.
Nobody else is so early to rise, or so late to supper. Nobody else gets so much fun out of trees, dogs, and breezes. Nobody else can put into one pocket a rusty knife, a half eaten apple a three-foot rope, six cents and some unknown things. .
A boy is a magical creature - he is your headache but when you come home at night with only shattered pieces of your hopes and dreams, he can mend them like new with two magic words, "Hi Dad !"

Opportunities don't come often. They often come quietly and go by with being noticed. Therefore, it is advisable that you valued and treat them with care. When opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realizes it of its own. If you intend to fulfill one of your ambitions, and you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. The difference between a man who succeeds and one who do not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes full preparations to meet opportunities when the unsuccessful person works much and just waits to see them pass by. In my opinion there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are preparing fully and qualified highly can make use of them to achieve our purposes.

六、书面表达
With the development of the Internet, online shopping has become more and more common in China. Online shopping has provided some benefits for us, but it also has some disadvantages at the same time.
Obviously, it’s a convenient and effective way to buy goods without leaving our home. Moreover, goods online are usually sold at lower prices than in real stores. Last but not least, you can see other customers’ comments, which can help you make choices.
Nevertheless, as every coin has two sides, shopping online also has disadvantages. Firstly, it is very hard to tell whether the goods are fake or not. Secondly, customers lose some pleasure of shopping because they can’t try or check the goods before buying them. Additionally, it’s not safe to pay online, because your passwords can be stolen.
All in all, I think that we should have a cautious attitude towards online shopping in order to avoid wasting money or buying things of poor quality.
