No one would doubt the truth that man’s existence essentially on material things. We need them to get fed, clothed and sheltered. Once we are living near the breadline, we’ll feel frustrated and miserable.
However, our contentment does not merely lie in material things. This is especially the case in modern times. The fast-developing economy has noticeably improved our lives and fulfilled most of our material needs. Then there comes the need of spiritual satisfaction, which is derived from good health, close friends, a loving spouse, well-raised children, a home built on love, a clear conscience, a worthy goal and an enjoyable job. While material things may lose their charm over time, spiritual satisfaction will bring us lasting happiness.
Therefore, to live a happy life, we should focus more on those things that meet our spiritual demands. After all, when our need for bread is met, happiness will not come unless we feel spiritually satisfied.
Material things are important for man’s existence. No one can survive without material things. After all, they are our base. Only when our simply inner desires for material things are satisfied, may we consider the other thing. Of course, solving the problem for hunger is natural ability. When we stand at a hungry position, we would rather take every effort to seek food than talking something above recent condition. So material things are necessities for man to live in the world.
With the basic material things being solved, man also needs to seek spiritual satisfaction. It is the thought that is difference between man and animals. Animals always make a living by unceasingly seeking for food, but man stands higher. We could pursue spiritual satisfaction above basic need to life, like happiness and values. We could not just seek for material thing, or we are similar with animals. And we pursue our own spiritual satisfaction instead of temporary material things.
In my eyes, we should balance the relation between material things and spiritual satisfaction. We not only pursue material things, but also seek spiritual satisfaction. Extremely pursuing materials or happiness both would not make our life perfect.
