Dear Dr. Science,I couldn’t sleep at all last night. My sister said it was because I ate a bowl of really spicy(辛辣的) chili(辣椒) right before bedtime, but I think that’s stupid. Can spicy foods at bedtime really affect(影响) our sleep?
| Sleepless in Seacaucus |
| Dear Sleepless,I know where you’re coming from, as I often eat chili before sleep. What does science say? Researchers in Australia did an experiment to find out the effects of spicy foods on sleep patterns. They gave a group of people delicious late-night meals. Some nights, they got spicy meals. Other nights, their meals were light. When people ate spicy foods, their sleep patterns were changed. They took longer to fall asleep and they slept less too. Researchers aren’t sure exactly how spicy foods change sleep patterns, but they have some research. Simple stomach upset or indigestion(不消化) may be an important factor. But they also consider that body temperature plays a role. Spicy foods include a chemical that can raise the body’s temperature. Other studies have connected increased body temperature with poor sleep. So before you go to bed, put down spicy food! Dr. Science |

Millions of Chinese have been playing a mobile game called Travel Frog recently. You play as the “mother” of a frog who lives alone and enjoys traveling. You need to prepare food and tools for his trips. The frog will send you postcards while he is away.
The game’s popularity may have something to do with how lonely people are these days, according to the Xinhua News Agency. Many players have said that the lonely frog is just like them. But playing with the frog helps them forget their loneliness for a short time.
Loneliness seems to be a common problem today. According to the Guardian, a British daily, about 40 percent of American adults say they’re lonely. And in the UK, about one in five people in the country are “always or often lonely”, The Telegraph reported.
This might be why the UK government announced the country’s very first “Minister of Loneliness” in January. The minister’s job is to find ways to help UK citizens feel less lonely. The minister’s office will provide more money for activities that connect people together.
This loneliness problem may be partly because of social media (媒体). When we see pictures of friends having fun or posting pictures on WeChat or Microblog, we may compare their “perfect” lives with our own and feel sad and lonely.
But we should remember that no one is born to be lonely. As the UK poet John Donne once wrote, “No man is an island. Every man is a piece of the continent(陆地), a part of the main.”
24.People play the mobile game called Travel Frog because they are ________.
A.excited .lonely .angry .happy

Roberta, Peter and Phyllis lived in a large house in London. Father worked hard in a government office. He was never angry and always ready for a game. Mother was almost at home, ready to play with the children, and read to them, and help them do their home-lessons.
These three lucky children always had everything they needed: pretty clothes, good fires, a lovely playroom and a dog called James. They had a happy life, but they did not know how happy till the pretty life in the large house was over.
Peter had a toy engine and it broke. After dinner, Peter showed Father the engine. Father looked it over and promised to do it on Saturday.
At that moment two men came to see Father. Minutes passed, Father’s voice came out from the study, loud and angry.
More time passed. Then Mother came in and said, “Father’s been called away—on business.”
A week after their father went away, their mother said, “Now, we’re going to move to the country. A pretty little white house, called Three Chimneys.”
The family started packing: clothes, plates, candles and also tables and chairs.
“We seem to be taking all the ugly things,” said Roberta.
“We’re taking the useful ones,” said Mother. “We’ve got to play at being poor for a bit.” Peter said joyously, “I do like moving! I wish we moved once a month.”
Mother laughed and said, “I don’t like moving!”
As she turned away, Roberta saw her face. She never forgot it.
“Oh, Mother,” she whispered, “how I love you! You are brave enough to laugh when you’re feeling like that!”
Then they took a train to Three Chimneys. No one knew how long they had been in the train when Mother woke them up.
They stood in the cold night air on the dark platform. At the moment they didn’t know how important the station and the trains would become to them. They didn’t know they were going to be the railway children.

In the past five years, about 2.8 billion of school textbooks were sold per year, with total spending of 20 billion yuan, news magazine Outlook Weekly reported.
Zhao Dehua is in charge of(掌管) a recycling resources company. He said many college graduates sell the textbooks they have used for four years at an average(平均) price of 1 yuan per kilogram. As these textbooks are mostly used to produce recycled paper, the cost is even higher than that of raw(未加工的) paper. It is because the processing steps of recycled paper are complex.
At present, free textbooks related to music, art and P. E. for the nine-year compulsory education(义务教育) have been reused. But because of the lack of a good platform and service supporting system for the second-hand textbook trade, most of the textbooks used for compulsory education and higher education end up as waste.
“Every year, second-hand booksellers collect textbooks at a price of about 4,000 yuan a ton. It is more than twice the price of ordinary waste paper. But the number of people who come to collect second-hand books is still small,” Zhao Dehua said.
“Setting up the system of textbook recycling can not only save resources, but also help cultivate student’ saving habits and sense of responsibility,” said Zhu Pin, a head of a school of nine-year compulsory education in Jiangxi Province. The school has set up a system for reusing the textbooks and the books are disinfected(消毒) every week.
Data(数据) from Xianyu, Alibaba’s online platform for used goods, showed that 1.56 million textbooks were sold last month. It now has more than 30 million online sellers.
31.Why is the cost of textbooks recycling higher than that of raw paper?

You must have gotten used to the food waste that can be seen everywhere in the school restaurants. Recently, this problem was brought back into discussion when China started an “empty-plate” campaign(运动).
CCTV news media explained the importance of saving food to us. At the center was criticism(批评) of Mukbang, also known as “eating shows”. The hosts overeat to satisfy the curiosity(好奇心) of people, so as to get attention and money. However, what you see is not always the truth. The hosts pretend to eat 50 hamburgers in front of the camera. While behind the truth, they throw up the food that they have eaten. The food waste caused by eating shows is shocking and worrying.
“Eating show” hosts not only waste food, but also make the idea of wasting things acceptable. Young people may be easily influenced by them. They may throw away some of the food they order at school. They should feel sorry about such behavior, but their favorite “eating show” hosts now make them believe that’s all right. Millions of people across China and the world don’t have enough food to eat. The food you waste could have meant a lot to them.
Different people can do different things to help reduce food waste. Schools and restaurants can start serving smaller size. Besides, students must learn more about the hard-working people who spend their time and energy growing food. Next time, think before you order: Do you really need so much on your plate?

Boys and girls, the senior high entrance examination is coming. What action should we take to prepare for it? Suggestions are as follows.
To begin with, remember to exercise to build our bodies and have a balanced diet every day. Keep a good mood and don't worry too much no matter what difficulty we face. Good communication is of great help. More time can be spared with our parents and classmates if necessary, and we can share the happiness and sadness with them.
Second, manage the time properly and make a list of the things we need to do every day. Don't put off what should be done today till tomorrow.
Last but not least, finish every exercise and take every test seriously, because practice makes perfect. Correcting mistakes in time can help make it possible to improve our study. Keep in touch with our teachers and don't forget to ask them for help every time we have trouble with either study or life.
With these done, I do believe we Grade 9 students will achieve success in the senior high entrance examination. Nothing is impossible as long as we put our heart into it.
