What Are Chinese Superstitions

Chinese civilization is very old, dating back millennia（一千年） and over the centuries a vast of fables（寓言）, beliefs and superstitions have aggregated（汇总）. Many superstitions are intertwined（交织） with ancient customs, traditions and Chinese history itself. In some ways it is difficult to separate the superstitions from customs and traditions as they at some point were one and the same. With recent political climates, superstition is officially discouraged, so many formerly legitimate （合法的）customs and traditions were deemed to be superstitions and were pushed into folklore.

Numbers

The Chinese are very superstitious about numbers, with many numbers being regarded as either good or bad luck, or carrying various meaning. The most important number in Chinese superstitions is the number eight. It is considered to be very lucky by Chinese because the pronunciation of the number eight is very similar to the pronunciation for prosperity. Similarly, the number four is considered to be very unlucky because the pronunciation of four is very similar to the pronunciation of death. It is also considered unlucky to marry someone either three or six years older or younger than oneself.

New Year

Many Chinese superstitions revolve around the Chinese New Year. The New Year has particular symbolic importance for Chinese and many superstitions and customs revolve around ensuring good luck and prosperity for the year to come. For example, on New Year's Eve every window and door must be left open so the old year can leave and the new year can enter. Sweeping must never be done on New Year's Day for fear of sweeping away good fortune. If a plant blooms on New Year's Day this is seen as a sign of great prosperity（繁荣）.

Animals and Food

Animals play an important role with traditional Chinese beliefs and as a result many superstitions revolve around the treatment and eating of animals. It is considered unlucky, for example, to keep a tortoise as a pet as this will bring slow progress in any endeavor(努力）. If a woman strikes an animal during pregnancy this will cause the baby become like this animal and adopt its characteristics.

Buildings

The concept of Feng Shui is important to many Chinese and governs the way many buildings are structured and arranged. It is bad luck to have two doors facing one another. It is thought that building a north-facing house will bring bad luck. Rooms and their location are important. It is to be avoided for the master bedroom to be built on top of the garage, and the kitchen should never be situated above a first-floor toilet.

Here is an article about Chinese superstition.First,it gives a brief introduction of Chinese superstition and tell us it’s opinion that superstition in China is more like traditional customs.Then it shows us some examples about superstitions in 4 aspects:number,new near,animal&food and buildings.Some of the traditions even very strange to me!The most impressing one to me is pregnant women can’t strike animals,ancient people might have used this to make their women be quiet and do nothing but rest in their room. 

Generally speaking,I firmly support the points of view that Chinese superstition is part of our traditional culture,but that doesn’t mean we should hold on to every single piece of it.Not only because some of them are against our humanity,but also because there are always somebody who use these to cheat for money.So we should always keep calm to our superstition.
