Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports [报告] came into London Zoo that a wild [野生] puma had been spotted [发现] forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken [携带,取] seriously [严重的].
However [然而], as the evidence [证据] began to accumulate [积累], experts [专家] from the Zoo felt [感到] obliged [必要] to investigate [调查], for the descriptions [描述] given by people who claimed [要求,声称] to have seen the puma were extraordinarily [异常的] similar [相似].
The hunt [寻找] for the puma began in a small village [村庄] where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards [码(计量单位)] away from her.
It immediately [立刻] ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening.
